Writing the single:
First of all we started by writing the main riff on the lead guitar. It was taken from a song that had already been written by a fellow band member and we all decided it would be nice to develop it a bit more on the lead guitar. After that a bass line was added, playing three notes throughout the chorus to emphasis the main parts to it. We then added a drum beat and the rhythm guitar to add some texture to the song. Lyrics were then added to the composition with a melody and that was it, the song was done.
The first day of recording: 07/11/18
Today we started recording the drums. This took a while to record because we needed to set up the mics and then record the track so that it was in time and sounded how we wanted it to. It took us 4 attempts in total.
The second day of recording: 13/11/18
Today we were very focused and managed to get both guitars, bass guitar and the vocals recorded with the harmonies. We still need to develop it a bit more but we have got the majority of it done.
The third day of recording: 14/11/18
We re-recorded the harmonies for the vocals today as well as the solo on the lead guitar. The solo took a while because we wanted it to be perfect so we had to keep on recording it. We managed to get it done in the end.
The fourth day of recording: 21/11/18
Today we started to mix parts of the song. However, we all decided that the solo still didn’t suit the feel of the song so we put the bridge section on a loop so that the lead guitarist could play along and try to find something that fits. After we finally managed to get the perfect guitar solo, we decided that we should re-record my bass line as parts of it were slightly out of time- as well as my e string being flat because I forgot to tune my guitar beforehand. We also thought that a lick could be added on the bass guitar just before the song kicks in to give it a bit of a boost. Half of the song has already been mixed so now we just need to book one more day in the recording studio so that we can finish mixing the track and bounce it to an MP3 and burn it to a CD.
Evaluation:
Our song is more unique than the others being produced on this course for several reasons;
- The instrumentation
- The genre
- The atmosphere that the song creates
- The overall sound and vibe
- How we have decided to mix it
